Blue Iris Meadow — Miniature Impressions No. 6

Blue Iris Meadow is an original impressionist floral landscape painting — 8" × 8" (20.3 cm × 20.3 cm), acrylic on canvas — by Washington, DC–based contemporary artist Maria-Victoria Checa.

I painted this piece drawn to the way cobalt and indigo irises stand out against a field of gold — the blues feel almost electric next to all that warm yellow, with soft green stems weaving through to hold the composition together. I worked the iris petals with quick, loaded strokes to keep their shape recognizable while still letting the color do most of the talking, the way a field of blue flowers catches your eye before anything else registers.

This is the sixth piece in my Miniature Impressions series — small-scale studies that let me explore color and light with the same intensity as my larger landscapes, distilled into a more intimate format. Each piece stands on its own, or joins the growing series as a set.
