Summer Sky Garden — Miniature Impressions No. 7

Summer Sky Garden is an original impressionist floral landscape painting — 8" × 8" (20.3 cm × 20.3 cm), acrylic on canvas — by Washington, DC–based contemporary artist Maria-Victoria Checa.

I painted this piece with a deep cobalt sky as the backdrop, letting a riot of poppies, ranunculus, and white blossoms rise up against it in reds, pinks, oranges, and cream. The blue behind the flowers does a lot of work here — it makes every warm color in the garden feel even more saturated, the way a summer sky can make a flower bed look almost impossibly vivid right before dusk. I let a few stems curve loosely above the rest, breaking the composition open so the whole piece feels a little wild and unstructured, the way a real garden grows.

This is the seventh piece in my Miniature Impressions series — small-scale studies that let me explore color and light with the same intensity as my larger landscapes, distilled into a more intimate format. Each piece stands on its own, or joins the growing series as a set.
