Violet Meadow — Miniature Impressions No. 1

Violet Meadow is an original impressionist floral landscape painting — 8" × 8" (20.3 cm × 20.3 cm), acrylic on canvas — by Washington, DC–based contemporary artist Maria-Victoria Checa.
I painted this piece thinking about the way a meadow looks when you stop to really look at it — not one flower at a time, but all of them together, colors bleeding into each other in the afternoon light. The purples, blues, and magentas crowd the canvas the way wildflowers crowd a field in early summer, with a single warm marigold breaking through the cool palette to keep the eye moving. I worked quickly with a loaded brush, letting the petals stay loose and unresolved so the whole piece feels alive rather than catalogued.
This is the first piece in my new Miniature Impressions series — smaller-scale studies that let me explore color and light with the same intensity as my larger landscapes, just distilled down. I wanted each one to hold its own as a small jewel of a painting, whether it lives on its own or alongside others from the series.
